“Champion of the World” by Maya Angelou and “Fish Cheeks” by Amy Tan are two well written narrative story. In the story of “Champion of the world” by Maya Angelou describe a boxing match with Joe Louis and a contender that is heard at a bar though a radio. In “Fish Cheek” by Amy Tan describe her being afraid of what her crush might think of her Chinese Christmas. Amy Tan “Fish Cheek” story is a stronger, better narrative then “Champion of the World” by Maya Angelou because of the overall mood, imagery, symbolism, and prospective of the story compare to “Champion of the World”.
The mood that “Fish Cheek” give is embarrassment and anxiety the author has toward the family because of their Chinese root and when inviting her crushes family over for a Christmas. The author shows embarrassment in second paragraph “I cried. What would Robert think of our shabby Chinese Christmas? What would he think of our noisy Chinese Relatives who lacked proper American manners?” (Amy Tan). This show the embarrassment of the author toward her roots and where she come from. The author is also worried about what her crush will think of her since her family does not act American.
The mood in “Champion of the World” give a cold harsh tone toward the way the author tells the story about the fight. In fourth paragraph she wrote “That white man doesn’t mind hugging that n_____ now, I betcha” (Maya Angelou). This show the reader that the mood was cold and harsh. Also, in paragraph eleven she wrote “My race groaned. It was our people falling. It was another lynching, yet another Black man hanging on a tree. One more woman ambushed and raped. A black boy whipped and maimed.” (Amy Tan). This show the reader the cold and dark tone feeling giving from the quote which made the story feel one sided for the reader to feel bad for the author and the people around for most of the story. Which made the mood in “Fish Cheek” more related able and allow the reader to have their own opinion compared to the “Champion of the world” where the reader is sort of not able make their own opinion and just stick with the authors.
In the third paragraph of “Fish Cheek” Tan uses imagery to help the reader with a more accurate depiction of the kitchen and food. She was not describing the food on how she saw it but how her crush would see it. Tan was also showing the reader how negative she was connoting the food with word like slimy, fleshy, and bulging. This show the reader the embarrassment she had when seeing the food and was scary to see the way her crush family would perceive them.
In the fourteens paragraph Maya uses imagery to keep the reader in suspense when she said “We didn’t breathe. We didn’t hope. We waited.” she made the reader believe that Joe Louis lost. In till the next sentence show Joe getting back up and fight back which made the reader be on the edge of their sit in till he won. The imagery on both these stories are great but the reader is more involve in the story with “Fish Cheek” because Tan gives more imagery and wording that gets the reader thinking.
